  • Should I Stay? Or Should I Go?

I remember when I was a little kid, my dad and stepmom decided to go to a haunted house while we were out of town on vacation. As we walked down this loooooong, daaaaark, spooooooky, scaaaaaary... (ummm, you probably get the point) hallway, we entered a room with what looked like 100 doors. It was up to us to decide which door to enter through as we embarked on our adventure. As my dad stood there making up his mind on which way he would take, that I was sure would lead us to our death, I made a decision that would alter my future. I chose my door, THE EXIT DOOR! No joke. I seen the exit door and ran. On my way out, I even passed Frankenstein, who was catching a smoke while on his break from killing people.

Recently, while reading a Bible story book to my four year old, I ran across the following statement about people's opinion of Jesus:

"But some thought that he should have stayed put in the carpenter's shop."

That spoke volumes to me. There come a point with Jesus that he had to leave the carpenter's shop. That day that he seen the exit door. Now, there wasn't anything wrong with the carpenter's shop, because there were many valuable things learned in the shop. Luke actually states that "Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." That shop was very important. But, if he had stayed in the shop, where would we be now? He may have went down as the greatest carpenter that the world has ever known. I'm really glad he decided to leave and go toward the cross rather than out back to the lumber pile.

Regardless of who you are, is it time to ask yourself, "Should I stay or should I go?" Should I stay in the comfort of what I know really well? Or should I go into the place that really makes me uncomfortable? Quite honestly, the place that smells with fear. If I stay, I may be the best at what I'm currently doing. If I go, I may fail. People may talk about me. Some people may even wish for me to fail.

"Your time in the carpenter's shop has changed your life, but your time spent afterward will change others."

This is not a message to encourage you to quit, but to change how you do it from here on out. Your time in the carpenter's shop has changed your life, but your time spent afterward will change others. They accused Jesus of being out of his mind and even possessed by the devil himself. I assure you that when you make that decision to leave the shop, you will find resistance. Now is the time that God will use your "shop" experience to break satan's hold on others. So be encouraged, because every battle you face from here on out is worth someone else's victory. Be strong!

  • Belly up to the bar!

Amanda and I made up our minds years ago that we wanted to be great. We wanted to achieve great things. We wanted to do great things. We wanted to raise great kids. We wanted to have a great marriage. As a matter of fact, we decided that everything that we could lay our hands on would be great. Who wouldn't want great things, right?

The truth is, we knew in order to get to that place of greatness, we had to do it according to God's word. Jesus said, "But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves." These were the words of the ruler of all. The one who now has the keys of life and death. In my opinion that makes you the ruler.

We knew in order to achieve great things, we would have to subscribe to this philosophy. We would have to believe in it ourselves and teach it to our children. We knew that it wouldn't be easy, but great things aren't usually easy. We couldn't just have Bible studies about being servants, but we actually had to DO IT! When dealing with our children, we realized we needed to provide opportunities for them to serve. When I speak of providing opportunities, I'm not talking about finding a community service project and dropping them off while I go to the mall or go home and take a nap. I'm talking about getting in there with them and living a life of servanthood. They may slow down your ability to serve at first, but trust me, they will surpass you pretty quickly. Don't sell them short.

One thing that I've noticed over the years is that those who develop a servants heart are easier to be around. They don't demand very much from those around them. They are more concerned with overflowing in people rather than sucking the life out of all of them. These are people that I refer to as being "bellied up to the bar." Calling out for another glass. Asking for constant refills of nuts. They show up early and leave late. But Jesus said he was "among you as one who serves."

So ask yourself, am I bellied up to the bar demanding more or am I among the people in the crowd giving more. I assure you that the greatest of the two is the one among the crowd giving all they have to give. You will bring joy to those around you by being a servant. Not just when you feel like, but all the time. Developing a heart of servanthood that will last a lifetime.

  • 9:12 Moment

Are you facing a tragic event in your life right now? Are you still feeling the effects of an unfortunate event or series of events that have happened over the last several years? If so, I want to take some time to encourage you in getting through these tough times. One thing that every human being has in common is that we are guaranteed we will go through times of trials, tragic events, or unfortunate circumstances. As a matter of fact, we usually see more change during those times than we do any others. The question is, is it the change we long for? Or is it the change God desires to make in our lives?

Our church, along with the entire country, looked back with heavy hearts yesterday as we remembered the events of 10 years ago. As we looked back in remembrance, we also looked at facing personal struggles as well. I shared a few things that God's word encourages us to do that I would like to share with you.

    Remember where you dwell

Psalm 91:1 says, "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the most high will rest in the shadow of the almighty."

That's a powerful scripture and if you get time you should read the entire chapter. Think of the benefits of living and resting in that place. Most of all, having God's authority in the tough decisions you are faced with right now.

    Never Forget

In particular don't forget God's covenant with you through these tough times you are facing. It's healthy to remember our past when we have a healthy vision for where we are going. It's not ok when we let our past blot out our ability to have a vision. It makes us bitter, regretful, and angry when we focus on our past. Always remember that God's promises are promised to you.

In Genesis, Noah and his family had just faced one of the most tragic events the world has ever known. We decorate our nurseries with the beautiful pictures of Noah's Ark, but I don't think those were beautiful times. Almost all of man kind drowned to death. Noah was on a boat for a long time...WITH ANIMALS. Most of us would struggle with being with our immediate families that long as well. But then we see Noah and his family coming off the boat and figuring out where to go and what to do. Have you ever felt that way?

Genesis 9:12 says, "And God said...". My prayer for you as you face tough times in your life, possibly even tragic events, that you have a 9:12 moment. That God speaks! Not only does he speak, but he speaks louder than any of the other voices and noises in your life. It is not the event that will bring about great changes in your life, but it's the decisions you make after the fact that will bring about those changes. It's your response to what is going on. I pray that you will make your decision in the rest of the shadow of the almighty. I pray that you will make your decision based upon "God said" rather than what you or someone else said. The event will bring about change, but that change will be based upon how you react.

  • The Perfect Weight Loss Plan

Have you ever looked for the perfect diet? You know, the one that allows you to eat Big Macs and Chinese buffets everyday and still loose 2.1 pounds per week. All that without exercising one second. Well, I have great news! While doing some research about mass and weight I came across a great way to lose weight. MOVE TO MERCURY!

I punched in my weight, which is...to much, and I found out that on Mercury I would way 88 pounds. WOW! I haven't weighed that since elementary school. The only problem I see is getting to Mercury. Besides, I'm not sure how many Chinese buffets they have on that planet. It did get me to thinking about something else though.

Weight is defined as the measurement of the pull of gravity on an object. More weight, more pull. Less weight, less pull. Just makes sense, right? There is a time in Matthew 11 when Jesus says, "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

I may not be able to relocate to Mercury, but I can relocate my burden that weighs me down. Jesus is actually looking for people who are weighed down in need of help with their load. I don't know about you, but I probably wouldn't choose the guy that was "gravity" challenged. But Jesus says, "Come to me!" He's asking you to give him your load. In return you will find rest from the load you've been carrying. In my opinion, that's better than living on Mercury.

Give him the opportunity right now to lift your load. Give your worries and your junk to someone who can take care of every one of them. It's your decision! Be burdened by the gravity of your problems or be freed from it all.

  • Does God Hate You?

Sometimes I get angry. Sometimes I get frustrated. Sometimes, I even want to cuss. Sometimes, I actually do it in my mind. Don't tell anyone in our church, they may think that I'm not perfect anymore. What I get angry, frustrated, and on the verge of cussing about may surprise you.

I'm a passionate person and sometimes I take everything way to personal. But, the thing that gets me the most is the heart of the church. I examine myself frequently making sure that my heart lines up with the heart of God. One thing I've found to be true about the heart of God is that he has a heart for people. Good people, bad people, short people, tall people, ugly people, and pretty people. Jesus was and is a friend to children, the poor, the sick, all races and yes, even sinners. John 3:16 is enough to prove his heart for sinners.

The part that angers me is that I see church leaders preaching and teaching a message that we may not really believe. If we really believe the message that we preach, then we'll be ok with getting a little uncomfortable. We'll be ok when someone walks into church that looks a little different than the rest of us do. I make it a point weekly to make a new friend that's not like me. Some of them cuss, drink, smoke weed, and few of them hate church.

Is being like Jesus shutting what makes us uncomfortable out? Is that really what his heart is? When someone "sins", we automatically shut them out? Could you imagine if God treated you or I that way? When did people have to clean up their act before they entered the church building? I'm glad I got in before that policy took effect. I pity the ones that didn't though.

Just the other day, someone was telling me that on there second visit to a church, the Pastor's first question was, "Hey, I noticed you didn't give last week." You've got to be kidding!!!!! This is our concern?

If you're a church leader, please, please, please examine your heart and make sure that it lines up with God's. If you're involved in your church, encourage those around you, especially the leaders to follow the heart of God and go after the "unwanted". Be a friend to the sick and the poor. Be more concerned with how much someone needs you more than how bad they get on your nerves.

If you've been turned off to christianity by those who represent it, I assure you God does not hate you. The heart of God is greater than you can imagine. Yes, he hates sin, but he loves you more than you or I can ever know. I encourage you to seek him, his love, his grace and he will show you how incredible he is. After all, he is the message. He is the only hope any of us have, even the "perfect" ones.

  • When life gives you lemons!

Usually I blog about Church, the Bible, or leadership. All of those are passions of mine so that's why I blog about them. This isn't about any of the above, but still could be considered a passion of mine and a spiritual experience for those who participate.

The old saying is, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade", but we have discovered an alternative. Make lemon bars! For less than $3 a box, you can pick up Krusteaz in your local grocery store. Add 3 eggs and a little water and you've got an awesome treat.

Now you may be making the same face my kids were when I suggested a few weeks ago in the grocery store. "LEMON BARS" they said. "GROSS" they said. "LET'S GET BROWNIES" they said. I said, "That's fine, you guys get brownies and I'll get these." After eating a couple boxes over the last few weeks they have found that dear old Dad was onto something. Everytime I talked to them today they said, "Dad! When are you going to make those lemon bars?"

You might not have spiritual experiences with your food like I do, but I guarantee you that these will be worth the money and time. If not, call me and I'll come take them off your hands.
